Mumbles
It was a story laced with tragedy, miracles, heroism and enough spectacular video footage to help the 24/7 "news" channels fill a week's worth of "newsholes." It was a story that played out with so much drama for so long it had the entire nation wondering about the bridges they cross everyday. And those who weren't wondering were asking "Michael who?" Judy has been afraid of crossing wooden bridges since she was a little girl. There were times Harvey would have to stop his truck on a country back road and let her get out and walk across the bridge and climb back into the truck on the other side. With too much exposure to the I35W bridge story, I could see myself waving to friends as they drove by while I was waiting for Judy to walk across the bridge over our "big muddy." The big bridge story in our community, however, is the vandalism of our covered bridge at Coheelee Creek. Vandals have tried to burn it, they kick boards out of the walls, and the grafitti is unending. Understand, this question is coming from the last person to climb the old, old water tank and scrawl, "Class of '64" across the side for all to see, but, just what the hell drives those scoundrels to try their best to destroy something so near and dear to us all? Or is it? If it is, let's find a way to put an end to it! See next week's paper! ************
