During a recent ceremony on the Dothan Campus, the Troy University Alumni Association Wiregrass Chapter presented Blakely native, Mia Pittman with a $1,500 scholarship.

In all, the alumni association handed out awards totaling $10,500 to nine Dothan Campus students. Scholarship recipients were chosen based on academic performance, leadership and community and school involvement.

Other full-time students receiving awards were Bethany Brooks, Norris Danzey and Heather Quittschau of Dothan. Parttime students receiving checks for $750 included Amy Farver of Daleville, Phong Huynh of Dothan, Melissa Patterson of Ozark and Robbie Treadwell of Headland.

The organization's primary objective is to provide scholarships for deserving students, according to Gayla White, alumni association president-elect. Funding for the awards comes primarily from the alumni chapter's largest event, the annual Troy University Alumni Association Jackson Thornton Invitational Golf Tournament presented by CenturyTel. This year's tournament is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 27 at Highland Oaks in Dothan.

"This is our way of giving back to the university," White said."We also want to provide students with an opportunity to attend school and to become a part of Troy and all it has to offer."
