DOT details shortfalls

The Georgia Department of Transportation has announced that in fiscal year 2007, the state was short $444.7 million for road maintenance, safety and improvements funds. The Department's whatsthebigidea.us website details which projects have been delayed due to lack of funds.

The website was originally launched December 2006 to announce the state's $7.7 billion transportation funding shortfall for construction projects. The website has been updated to include this fiscal year's maintenance, safety and improvements funding shortfall.

"Maintenance, safety and improvements funds are a big issue," says DOT Chairman Mike Evans. "We Georgians have grown accustomed to well maintained roads that are safe - anything less is not an option."

Maintenance projects typically include resurfacing, concrete slab replacement and repairs to roadways, bridges, medians, barrier walls and drainage structures.

Typical safety projects include installation of cable barrier medians, installation or upgrades of traffic signals, signage and railroad crossing devices.

Road improvement projects include enhancing signage, medians and adding turning lanes.

Georgia faces a $7.7 billion transportation funding shortfall over the next six years for construction projects and was short $444.7 million in FY 2007 for maintenance, safety and improvements.

The shortfalls are due to many factors including unprecedented population growth, rising construction and right-of-way costs, and the aging and deterioration of the state's infrastructure. For more details visit www.whatsthebigidea.us.
