Adult Ag classes, Young Farmers returns The Adult Agricultural Education and Young Farmer program has been reinstated at Early County High School. The educational program - one of 47 such programs funded 70 percent by state and 30 percent local funds - is open to anyone who has an interest in agriculture. Representative Gerald Greene and Senator John Bulloch, who were instrumental in securing the funds for the program during the last General Assembly, are excited about the educational opportunities this program will offer the citizens in Early County and the surrounding counties of Calhoun, Randolph and Clay. Twenty adult classes will be taught throughout the calendar year. Larry Worsley will serve as adult instructor and Young Farmer advisor and will continue to teach Agriculture at the high school. The Young Farmer organization is a leadership organization for adults participating in adult agricultural education classes. Young Farmer members may attend leadership training and attend the state Young Farmer convention that is held each year in January. Classes geared toward crop and livestock production will begin in November and run through planting season in early spring. Production agriculture classes will include but are not limited to, farm program updates, crop insurance coverage options, agricultural marketing, insect and weed identification and control, seed selection, forestry and wildlife management. Non-traditional agriculture classes will begin in August or early September. Classes will include Bahai grass and weed control in lawns, small sprayer calibration, farm pond management and deer management. A woodworking class will cover shop and tool safety and proper use of various power tools. Anyone with other interests or needs may contact Worsley at 723-5503. The program will include ag awareness. Elementary age students will be taught about local agricultural production and products. A field day will educate young students on the importance of agriculture.
Classes will be at night in the agriculture classroom at the high school. Class schedules will be announced as soon as possible.
