Weather ALERT!

An outdoor siren will soon be part of a warning system to alert local citizens of approaching weather hazards and other dangers that may threaten the community.

The siren will be located behind City Hall near the old fire siren. This siren was made possible by donations from local business and industry and the City of Blakely.

During installation the siren must be activated for testing and setting the tones. During this time the tones will be set to signal severe weather such as tornados and other hazards. Once the installation is complete the public will be notified of the operation and meaning of the signals and the appropriate actions to take.

The siren - only one part of an overall warning system - will be activated only in times of immediate threats to the public. Homeowners and businesses are being encouraged to purchase weather radios - $30 to $60 - which provide weather alerts and detailed information from the National Weather Service.

Some communities are looking at reverse 911 systems which alert citizens through mass calling from the 911 center. A grant is being pursued to assist the purchase of weather radios and possibly fund a reverse 911 system.
