FORMER state representative Cathy Cox of Bainbridge confirmed Tuesday that she will seek the office of Secretary of State in the 1998 election.

ED PUMPHREY, vice president of Georgia- Pacific's Cedar Springs Operations, has been named vice president of containerboard manufacturing in the east division.

PATALUA Circuit Superior Court Judge Joe Bishop last Friday appointed Claire Moseley Registrar for Early County.

CYNTHIA Levatte, a senior at the University of Georgia, is serving as one of the 10 members of the University Summer Orientation Team, a carefully selected group of students directly responsible for guiding new students during their orientation experience.

SGA ELECTED the 1997- 1998 student council. Officers named were: Matthew Shingler, president; Michelle Bonner, vice president; Ashley Simpson, secretary; and Leigh Garcia, treasurer.

Aug. 5, 1982

SEVEN hundred and 78 of the City of Blakely's 1745 registered voters, representing a 45 percent turnout, went to the polls Tuesday.

RUTH Evelyn Pelt and Eddie Walter Tolbert spoke their wedding vows July 24 at 4 p.m. at the New Prospect Baptist Church in Arlington.

KIRK Whitaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Whitaker, has been selected to perform as a member of Georgia 4-Her's Clover and Company.

50 YEARS AGO

Aug. 8, 1957

MR. AND MRS. Frank Bridges and children, Oscar and Kathy, of Tallahassee, spent the weekend here.

MR. AND MRS. Bobby King announce the birth of a son, Robert Edward, August 6 at Holland Hospital. Mrs. King is the former Gracie Clarke.

MISS JO ANN Moore spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Julian Moore. Presently Miss Moore is employed by Lagerquist Insurance Company in Atlanta.

MRS. MARY Givins Bryan, Director of the State Department of Archives, and her sister, Miss Carol Hunt, both of Atlanta, were visitors in Blakely this week, guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Richardson.

75 YEARS AGO

Aug. 4, 1932

DR. C.R. Barksdale was elected mayor and R.C. Singletary and R.C. Howell were elected to council in Tuesday's annual city election.

BLAKELY defeated Donalsonville in the latter city last Thursday afternoon 8-3, White, Davis and Hutchins working for Blakely. On Tuesday afternoon the locals defeated Leary 8 to 1, Grimsley and Hutchins doing the battery work.

MISS ETHAL Hartley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Hartley, of Colomokee, was married to Mr. John Marion Weeks, of Ellerbe, S.C., on last Thursday afternoon.

MR. WALTER F. Hall, of Nashville, Tenn., who was connected with the Early County schools for four years, was a visitor here the past week.

MR. A.C. Martin and son, of Jacksonville, spent the weekend here with relatives.

MR. AND MRS. Rufus B. Jennings are visiting relatives in Dawson this week.

THE YOUNGER set were entertained by Miss Lulia Womack on Monday night and Miss Mona Coleman on Tuesday night.

COL. WADE H. Powell has returned from a trip to North Georgia.

MR. W.J. Grist has returned from a visit to Macon.

MR. MARK Strong has returned from his New York trip.

MR. BYRD Odum, of Albany, visited relatives here last week.

MRS. T.J. Forrester, of Cowarts, Ala., is visiting Mrs. J.T. Freeman.

MISS IDA Blocker has returned from summer school at Brenau College in Gainesville.

THE YOUNG MEN of Blakely tendered the visiting young ladies a picnic at Sheffield's Mill last Tuesday.

125 YEARS AGO

Aug. 3, 1882

THE BARBEQUE at Red Oak Level on Saturday was a successful affair. Ben Wolf and the citizens of the Cuba community made splendid hosts. Col. Kennan, of Clay, was present and addressed the crowd, as did Mr. R.B. Taylor, Col. H.H. Powell and Mr. Green Kirkland.

WE UNDERSTAND there will be a tin shop opened in Blakely in a few days by Mr. R. Orr, of Cuthbert.

A GOOD DEAL of street working has been done in Blakely this summer. The force is now engaged in putting South Main Street in order.
