Commissioners review road names 10 YEARS AGO Aug. 7, 1997 SHERIFF Jimmy Murkerson says, "Buckle Up or Pay Up" in a new ad safety campaign filmed in Early County, since becoming the president of the Georgia Sheriff's Association. STATE SENATOR Mark Taylor of Albany talked with Thomas Daniels during a visit to Blakely last week. Since announcing his candidacy for Lt. Governor, Taylor has emerged as one of the front-runners among the field of 11 candidates. TRACY and Sandy Busby proudly announce the birth of their son, Aaron Lamar Busby, born July 15, 1997, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He weighed 8 pounds 1/2 ounce and was 20 inches long. NEW ROAD names were suggested by the countyappointed road naming committee including, Doodleville Lane, Chicken Road, Booger Bottom Road, Five Bridges Road and Turpentine Quarters. During the next several weeks, commissioners will present the names to their constituents. 25 YEARS AGO July 29, 1982 THE Blakely-Early County Dixie Boys Tournament team traveled to Roswell to participate in the state tournament. They were eliminated in the double elimination tournament, but they remain our champions. MISS GLYNIS Glass, 15- year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Glass of Blakely, has been selected to represent the Georgia Limousine Breeders Association as it's Queen for 1983. MR. AND MRS. Cary Horne of Donalsonville announce the birth of a daughter, Carie Brynn, born July 23, 1982, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. She weighed six pounds 7 and 1/2 ounces and was 20 inches long. CHARLES Cherry won first place in the soil, research and industry division as outstanding student at the 21st annual Natural Resources Conservation Workshop held at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. 50 YEARS AGO Aug. 1, 1957 J.B. GIBSON Construction Co., of Donalsonville, has been awarded the contract for 5.297 miles of grading and paving and one bridge on the Jakin-Blakely Road. MISS Caroline Whitehead is an entry in the "Southwest Georgia Tobacco Queen" contest to be held in conjunction with the third annual Tobacco Dance in Thomasville on Aug. 3. MRS. ANNIE Tom Fulton of Cookeville, Tenn., visited relatives here the past week. REV. AND MRS. W.E. Storey and daughters, Anne and Annette, are spending the week at Panama City Beach. MRS. HUBERT Farr is spending this week in Atlanta visiting her son, Glenn, and her sister, Mrs. R.S. Cawthon. MR. AND MRS. H.E. Pierson Jr., of Thomasville, announce the birth of a daughter, Beverly Louis, Friday, July 26, at Archbold Memorial Hospital. 75 YEARS AGO July 28, 1932 MR. AND MRS. J.A. Richards, of Jasper, announce the birth of a son, James Allen Jr., July 22. The baby is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Jones of Blakely. THE BANK of Fort Gaines failed to open its doors for business Monday morning, it has been learned here. MISSES Evelyn Sherman and Mary Hall will sail Saturday from Savannah on the City of Birmingham for New York, where they will spend several weeks. 100 YEARS AGO Aug. 1, 1907 FIRE destroyed the residence of Mr. R.L. Howell on Cuthbert Street on Thursday. The wood store belonging to Dr. W.B. Standifer and occupied by Mr. M.A. Kent was not damaged. MESSRS. H.M. Haynes, J.T. Freeman, A.J. Fleming and Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Boyett left Wednesday on a trip to St. Andrews Bay. MR. AND MRS. W.L. McDowell and Mr. T.B. McDowell are spending a few days at Lithia Springs. 125 YEARS AGO July 27, 1882 OUR FRIEND, Dr. A.D. Shewmake, was up this week on a visit to Blakely. The doctor is the owner of one of the best river plantations in Early County. WE ARE informed that Col. E.C. Bower is constructing a tan yard east of Cuthbert street, a short distance from the railroad depot. DR. McINTOSH reports that his crop of oats at 3,000 bushels thrashed out, besides 3 or 4 hundred bushels left in the sheaf.
