Coming down!
This house on River Street is one of seven which the City of Blakely has plans to demolish in the coming months. The demolition efforts were placed on hold, however, several months ago when they sought bids for the demolitions. The lowest bid was $15,000 per house. "The environmental impact of demolition had driven the cost up to a point we had to stop and reassess what we were going to do," Mayor Hall stated. To get the job done in a cost effective manner, the city has assumed the role of a general contractor, hiring different individuals and companies to handle various parts of the demolitions. "We think we will be able to hold the cost down to between $3,000 and $4,000 per unit," utilities director Charles Jenkins told the News Tuesday. "That house on College Street may cost a little more due to its size."
The next five substandard structures scheduled to be demolished are presently in the legal process.
