From our Files July 3, 1997 BLAKELY ROTARY Club president Marty Howard passes the gavel to incoming president Tommy Bell during the club's regular meeting Thursday at noon. DURWARD AND Mary Evans celebrated their 60th anniversary at Kolomoki Mounds State Park Sunday, May 25, with their friends, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. GOV. ZELL Miller congratulated Early County High School valedictorian Jason Peace during a reception at the Governor's Mansion for the state's best and brightest students last month. 25 YEARS AGO July 1, 1982 RICHARD "BUCK" Grist assumed the presidency of the Blakely Rotary Club at the conclusion of the weekly meeting held the past Friday. MR. AND MRS. John Hayes were honored by their children, Mr. Ben Hayes of Blakely, Mrs. James Hayes of Albany and Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Hayes of Pelham, Ala., with a reception June 13, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. HAROLD AND Cradell Davis announce the birth of their son, Kyle Omar, born June 3, 1982, at his grandmother's home. Kyle weighed 10 pounds 5 ounces and was 21 and 1/2 inches long. TOMMY EVANS, Chris Jarrett and Lavon Odom attended the 54th Annual State FFA Convention held at the State FFA-FHA camp near Convington. 50 YEARS AGO July 4, 1957 S.G. "BUDDY" Maddox Jr. spent several days in Lexington, Ky., the first week, going there to attend a "welcoming party" for Procter and Gamble officials in that city. A.J. SINGLETARY was installed as president of the Blakely Rotary Club at the weekly meeting held at noon the past Friday. MRS. LESTER George has returned from a week's visit to New York. She was accompanied by her daughter. Miss Virginia George, of Atlanta, and they made the trip by plane. While there they had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Billy Graham preach. MISS MURIAL Hall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Duncan Hall Sr., became the bride of William Fred Foster, son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Foster of Bluffton, Saturday evening, June 29, in the Blakely Baptist Church. IN A PRETTY home wedding on Thursday morning, June 6, Miss Dora Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.G. Simmons, of Dawson, became the bride of Grady Brownlee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Brownlee. 75 YEARS AGO June 30, 1932 THE following youths are attending the Citizens Military Training Camp in Fort Barrancus, Fla.: Ollin S. Grimsley, Milton E. Martin, Robert L. Geeslin and Lynwood Pickle. MR. AND MRS. Idus Brownlee announce the birth of a son, Emory William Brownlee, June 24. MR. AND MRS. Fred E. Martin, of Sowhatchee neighborhood, announce the birth of a son June 23. MISS DOROTHY Alexander, who has been teaching in public schools in Roanoke, Va., has returned to spend the summer here. 100 YEARS AGO July 4, 1907 REV. AND MRS. August Berens of Chicago announce the marriage of their daughter, Freida, to Mr. Richard Holmes Powell on Wednesday, June 26. MR. WILL D. Fleming left last Sunday to take a position with the Times- Recorder at Americus. THE SECOND District Masonic Convention is being held in Blakely this week. There is a large crowd present and the meeting is a great success. THE SMALL crowd enjoyed a picnic at Bailey's Mill last Tuesday. Miss Theresa Swann chaperoned them. DR. C.S. Middleton has sold out his interest in the shingle mill at Lucile to Col. A.J. Singletary. 125 YEARS AGO June 29, 1882
SOME OF our citizens are beginning to agitate the subject of an artesian well for Blakely. We don't know of any two things that would do more for Blakely just now than an artesian well and a first-class school house well furnished.
