Independence weekend celebration at Bagby

George T. Baggy State Park and Lodge will have activities for the Fourth of July weekend from Saturday, June 30 through Wednesday, July 4.

Activities begin at 2 p.m. Saturday in the day use area with a watermelon eating contest for kids and adults. Family beach games include a bug beauty contest, water balloon toss, sponge relay races, sack races and a bicycle parade. Decorate your bike in a patriotic theme and join the bicycle parade. Prizes will be awarded - so be creative! Golf carts are eligible to participate, too. Bring your lawn chairs and picnicking items to the Marina and enjoy the musical entertainment of Bell and Lane Acoustic Duo from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday evening.

The park is also hosting a carnival Sunday, July 1 beginning at 2 p.m. on the lawn behind the lodge. Enjoy an ice cream social, cupcake walk, face painting and games for the kids. Tickets may be purchased for $1 each and are good for one bowl of ice cream or one activity. There is no limit to how many tickets you can buy. If you are interested in alligators, see the "Rulers of the Swamp" video in the Coleman conference room at 4 p.m. Meet behind the lodge at 8 p.m. for an evening nature hike. Enjoy the sunset over the lake and unwind from the day. Be sure to wear appropriate shoes.

Wednesday, July 4, at 9 a.m. enjoy a morning nature walk to identify native trees and plants. Remember to wear walking or hiking shoes. Meet in front of the lodge.

All ages are invited to attend all programs. Activities are free to the public except the carnival, however visitors are reminded that a $3 park pass per vehicle is required. Other upcoming events at the park are an American Red Cross Blood Drive July 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a "Birds of Prey" program with live animals presented by Chehaw Park Saturday, Aug. 11 at 10 a.m.
