Longtime Giles, Justice practice draws to a close Friday will be the final business day for Blakely Immediate Care on Columbia Road in Blakely. The facility had been a satellite operation of the Miller County Hospital since 2003, comprised of the practice of Dr. Eugene Giles and Dr. Lowell Justice, and more recently Dr. Roy Reardon. The closing of Blakely Immediate Care is part of an effort by the Miller County Hospital to return the hospital to financial stability. The hospital announced the elimination of routine obstetrical services at the Colquitt hospital effective May 18. At that time they stated that steps were being taken to close the satellite physician practice in Blakely, but did not announce a projected closing date. "The hospital is currently operating at a loss. While the above noted changes are the most significant, other changes may be required to attain the required financial stability necessary to insure the quality of service," CEO Thomas D. Meadows stated in a news release. According to Meadows, the hospital had recorded $947,992 in indigent and charity care write offs as well as $2,498,046 in bad debts for the nine months ending March 31, 2007. An ad in last week's Early County News announced that Dr. Justice and Dr. Reardon were being relocated to facilities in Colquitt. At press time, Dr. Giles had not finalized any plans for the immediate future. Friday's closure of Blakely Immediate Care will mark the end of an era. Doctor Giles, a native of Ft. Gaines, and Dr. Justice, a native of Roberta, have been practicing medicine together in Blakely since 1973. Tomorrow, June 28, will mark the 42nd anniversary of the opening of Dr. Giles' practice on South Main St. in Blakely.
Giles and Justice resigned from the staff at Early Memorial Hospital in 1993. A short time later they became associated with Flowers Hospital in Dothan which at the time was expanding its presence in the Wiregrass area.
