Council freezes new requests for civic center Fights and over-sized crowds at some Blakely Civic Center events led the Blakely City Council to impose a moratorium on the facility's use during the summer. At their June 5 meeting, the council voted to honor any existing reservations for the facility, but to put a freeze on new requests until the fall. The new policy resulted from several incidents of misuse of the facility by citizens stating one event on their request form but, using the facility for an entirely different purpose. Councilman Torre Mills suggested a committee composed of council members Hutchins and Mills and the mayor be formed to consider future requests to rent the facility. Other policies relating to the rental of the civic center were discussed including loss of deposits if fire or law enforcement services were called. The council also voted to put in motion a plan to allow city customers to pay their utility bills with credit and debit cards. A resolution approved by the council gives the city clerk the authorization to establish the procedures and execute the necessary agreements to set the city up to accept credit and debit card payments. The council discussed the Downtown Development Authority which has been inactive for several years and the steps needed to reactivate the organization. The last appointed members will be contacted and new members considered for appointment. Further DDA discussion is slated for the July agenda.
In other business, the council heard a report on proposed work on the landfill and approved a beer license for Big Mama's.
