Unsuspected panic While the arrests resulting from the undercover operation were underway without incident Monday morning, an unexpected chase led to the arrest of two additional suspects. Deputies Brent Alderman and J.D. Murkerson pulled up to the basketball courts on Howell St., a known hangout for a number of the suspects being sought. Moments after they arrived a maroon pickup truck sped recklessly out of the parking lot. The deputies gave chase as the two suspects in the truck began tossing plastic marijuana bags from the vehicle. Demetrius K. Pugh of Arlington, a passenger in the vehicle, was apprehended by Murkerson when he exited the vehicle on Malone St. at the landfill. Alderman followed the pickup which came to a stop moments later on Howell Ave. Despite Alderman's commands for the driver to exit the vehicle, he sped off again leading officers to the intersection of North Church St. and Butler where he stopped the vehicle and tried to flee on foot. That suspect, Benjamin Edward Cawthon II, of 7130 Fryer Rd., struggled with officers briefly before being taken to the ground and placed in the rear of the patrol car. Cawthon is facing multiple charges, including possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, posession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, carrying a concealed weapon, and a number of traffic violations. Pugh was charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijana.
"We weren't looking for them, didn't even know who was in the truck," Murkerson stated. "But, they panicked and raced off throwing bags out of the truck which were hitting the windshield of the car."
