Preference is given to a student of African-American background. The scholarship was established by Wyatt and Peggy Redman, daughter of Vivian Alexander Davidson (deceased), and Judith Alexander Benton and Wyatt Alexander, daughter and son of Wyatt and Ida Mae Alexander (both deceased) to honor the value their parents, grandparents and aunts placed on education and justice. The donors are the grandchildren of Dr. Wyatt and Fannie Alice Alexander, and nieces and nephews of (deceased) Annette Alexander and Dorothy Alexander Norton. On their grandfather's side they are descendants of James Wooten Alexander, a Revolutionary War Captain buried in Blakely. On their grandmother's side, they are decedents of Benjamin Collier, who donated land on which the current courthouse stands. There is a long history of community service within the family.
The Alexander Scholarship Fund is administered by the Community Foundation of South Georgia. Further details about the scholarship may be found in the guidance department at the high school.
