From the Pulpit
Learn to love and serve each other
Jim Burgess

The last few weeks I have written about helping people who are in need. This is something that God put on my heart years ago. The early church grew by leaps and bounds and one of the reasons was that they helped those in need. One scripture that often comes to mind when I encounter someone in need is John 13:34. "A new command I give you: Love one another, as I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

If you really think about what this scripture says, it is hard to turn your back on anyone in need. Jesus died for us, that shows how much he loved us.

Jesus is telling us he expects us to love other Christians that much. Jesus also tells us to love our enemies. Matthew 5:4. Jesus said, "so you must love one another." He is telling us in John 13:34 that if we don't love one another no one will know that our message about Jesus is true.

If we don't help people in need, we appear to be hardhearted and unloving. I rebelled against the church when I was younger, and quit going to church because of the way people in the church acted. I didn't see the love they talked about in their lives. I didn't think the gospel was true. It was only after I saw the love of Jesus in another person's life that I realized that Jesus was real.

When I experienced the love of Jesus, it changed my life. I give out of my own pocket to help people in need, as well as helping people through the Blakely Ministerial Association.
