Michael Commander Captain Michael DeWayne Commander, 53, of Leary died Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Mr. Commander was born in Columbus Jan. 3, 1954, to the late John Corbitt Commander and Gracie Mae Pierce Commander. He was the regional captain with the law enforcement division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. He was a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, the Blue Knights Georgia III Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, the Southwest Georgia Police and the Sheriff's Intelligence Unit and Ranger Lodge 104 - Fraternal Order of Police. He was also a member of the Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, past president of the Cuthbert Lions Club and a member of the Flint River Harley Owners group. He received his bachelors degree in criminal justice from Troy State University and was currently working on his master's degree from Columbus State University. He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the Navy and was a member of Vilulah Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Linda Commander; three daughters, Michael Elyse Duke and husband Chad of Americus, Jodie Lea Swain and husband Josh of Reynolds, Ga., and Kaycee Ann Everson and husband Doug of Edison; three brothers, Jimmy Williams of Buena Vista, Anthony Williams and wife Alma of Maulk, Ga., and Jan Commander and wife Beckie of Columbus; and one granddaughter Rhylea Mae Swain and two granddaughters on the way. Funeral services were Friday, May 25, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Mathews Funeral Home with Rev. David Crowdis officiating. Interment followed at 1:30 p.m. at Andersonville National Cemetery.
