18 SGA grads turn tassels

Thomas Patrick Corrigan
Eighteen members of the Class of 2007 received their diplomas Thursday night at the Southwest Georgia Academy commencement exercises in Damascus.

Twelve honor graduates participated in the program, including the top three honor graduates who gave graduation addresses.

"Just before my third birthday, my family moved from Los Altos, California, across the country to rural southwestern Georgia in pursuit of a better and simpler life and childhood for my sister and me," top honor graduate Thomas Patrick Corrigan stated.

"When I was four, I started here at Southwest Georgia Academy. SGA was then and is now my world within a greater world that reflects the values of that greater world around me.

"I have started every school day with the Lord's Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, demonstrating the spirituality and patriotism that is sometimes no longer appreciated in the broader world.

"SGA has always made every opportunity, academic or athletic, available to me and I have been fortunate enough to have many great experiences," Corrigan stated.

Clay Daniel Hudson
"Today, my class is at a threshold between the past and the future. We can look back on the past knowing that we have the future ahead of us, an unbounded future that is open to anything and any accomplishment we desire. Tomorrow, the hard work toward the future begins.

He concluded saying, "In September, I head back to California to the place I was born, a reversal of the journey that I made at the beginning of my life, and I will take with me the values and memories of my home and my school, as will all of us who are graduating tonight."

Second honor graduate Clay Daniel Hudson told his classmates, "There is happiness that we have finally reached our destination looked forward to these past years, there is sadness that we have to leave behind and part from friends that we have seen almost everyday of our lives, and finally there is eagerness to move on with our lives and to enter college and the real world. But in our eagerness to move on, Class of '07, I challenge you this: Remember."

Melissa Caitlin Cooper
"Remember that even though we graduate tonight and our education from this institution is over, life still has many more opportunities to teach us. Remember where we came from as we venture out into place much different than SGA.

"Never forget the times we shared, the education we received from this school, and most importantly, the traditions, honor and responsibility that SGA has taught us. And so class I say simply, Remember," Hudson concluded.

"My wish is that from here on, each of us will face life and its experiences with faith and courage, third honor graduate Melissa Caitlin Cooper stated. "In the phases that are to come in our lives, let us keep a constant faith in God, our families and our friends.

"May we never forget the lessons we have learned from our many arguments and actions. May we take what we have learned from each other and use it in life," she stated.

"We will all make many new friends, but I hope that each of us will remember a little something about every one of us and will keep those memories close to our hearts.

"My wish is that no matter what, we will follow our own wishes and dreams. May we do what our heart tells us," Cooper concluded. "I hope that each of us will strive for nothing but the best and that we will never give up until we have reached our personal best."
