Dan Ponder of Donalsonville - who represents Early County in the legislature - announced last week he is switching from the Democratic to the Republican party effective immediately. MEMBERS of the Blakely Rotary Club traveled to Camp E-Tu-Nake to get a first-hand look at the program which serves youth offenders in a beautiful camp near the Chattahoochee River. THE UNITED States Achievement Academy has announced that eight Early County middle school and high school students have been named All-American Scholars. Roderick Harris, Kimberly Henderson, Jeff Perkins, LaTavious Powell, Mia Pittman, Shanice Richardson, Billy Strayer, and Mary Beth Temples received the honors. SOUTHERN Insurance Agency in Blakely has earned the designation of Senior Partner Agency with the Grange Insurance Companies of Columbus, Ohio. 25 YEARS AGO June 3, 1982 JACK SUTTON, vice president of the Bank of Early, was elected president of the Blakely Lions Club at Tuesday's meeting held at the Town and Country Club. THE DAUGHTERS of the American Revolution presented the 1982 Good Citizenship Medal to Mitch Clarke, son of Mrs. Marcile Clarke and Mr. Butch Clarke, at this year's annual awards day. Mitch was chosen by the high school faculty in recognition of his effort put forth in the field of American citizenship. PAMELA Rebecca Gentry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gentry of Blakely, has been named to the dean's list at Shorter College, Rome, Ga., for 1982 spring semester. THE SLUMPING Blakely Giants lost their third straight game last Sunday in Damascus. They return home this Sunday to host the Hilton Bluejays. 50 YEARS AGO June 6, 1957 SUZANNE Bryant, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Milton F. Bryant, was crowned "Sweetheart" of the Piedmont School of the year 1957 at the annual commencement exercises. THE FIRST open cotton bloom of the season to be brought to The News office, came from the farm of "Bubba" McGahee, being sent in Friday afternoon, May 31. TWO ATTRACTIVE and talented young misses, Pam Houston and Beverly Gilbert, furnished the program for the Rotarians at their weekly meeting the past Friday at noon. Beverly and Pam presented three tap dance numbers, "Suwannee River," "Bye, Bye, Blues," and "For You A Lei." MRS. RAMELLE Palmer, of Atlanta, spent the weekend here with her mother, Mrs.W.W. Fleming. MR. AND MRS. Fred Hodges, of Donalsonville, and Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Hodges, of Jacksonville, were Saturday visitors in the home of Mr. Ed Minter. LIONS CLUB Presidentelect Alex Howell, accompanied by Oree Thompson and "Tige" Earl Pickle, attended the Lions Convention in Atlanta this week. 75 YEARS AGO June 2, 1932 ABIT NIX, prominent citizen of Athens and candidate for governor of Georgia, was a visitor to Blakely Tuesday afternoon. BLAKELY defeated Damascus in the opening game of the Georgia- Alabama League scheduled here Tuesday by the score of 7 to 0. Batteries for Blakely, White and Hutchins; Damascus, Cook and Gordan. MR. AND MRS. T.P. Moore, of the Cuba community, announce the birth of a daughter on May 29. MR. AND MRS. H.R. Whitehurst, of the Bancroft community, announce the birth of a son on May 29. MR. AND MRS. V.H. Sutlive, of Thornsby, Ala., visited relatives in Early County the past week. ARTHUR WILLIAMS has returned from Gordon Institute to spend the summer. 100 YEARS AGO June 6, 1907 THE STATEMENT of the condition of the First National Bank is published in this issue. Deposits are listed at $68,882.5. It was signed by R.O. Waters, cashier, and attested by C.M. Deal, J.R. Pottle and E. Hilton. A HANDSOME Methodist chapel has been completed on the Freeman Road near the residence of R.F. Castellow. Rev. Whitley Langston has been promoting the enterprise. MISS VIRGINIA Blocker is at home from Brenau, where she took the medal for music. MR. J.C. HUDSPETH has sold his lands down on the Chattahoochee River to Messrs. E.A. Hilton and R.H. Hines, of Bibb County, and Mr. O.H. Sheffield of Cedar Springs. MISSES Mamie and Florrie Mosey, of Cedar Springs, and Misses Nell and Maggie Jones, of Columbus, were the guests of Miss Blanche Haynes the past week. MISS JETTA Womack has returned from a visit to Slocomb, Ala. 125 YEARS AGO June 1, 1882 ALF STOVALL, of the Cuba district, was in town Monday. MR. ALFRED Barksdale is trying the experiment of shipping cabbage from this place to market.
MR. ELLY Warren informs us that there is to be a big barbeque in the Navy Yard neighborhood on the first Saturday in July.
