Netherton wins daylily show

Jim Netherton earned Best in Show for his entry of "Emerald Splendor."
Despite drought and extremely unfavorable weather, area daylily growers managed to exhibit 150 top quality blooms at the 15th annual Daylily Show sponsored by the Southwest Georgia Hemerocallis Society Saturday at the Bainbridge Mall.

"We did not have as many daylilies exhibited this year as we have had in previous years, but the judges praised the quality of the blooms and everyone was pleased," said Frances Gray, president of the local daylily society.

The Best in Show award went to Jim Netherton of Peace on Earth Gardens, Blakely, for his entry of a yellow large flower, "Emerald Splendor."

Netherton also won awards for several other entries. They were: "Lillith Claire" (hybridized and registered by Netherton), best double flower; "Just For Breakfast," best small flower; "Desert Icicle," best unusual form; and "Spacecoast Cotton Candy," best off-scape.

Emmett Moore of Whigham won the sweepstakes award for the most blue ribbons in the show. His top awards included the best spider variant, 'Long Stockings."

Drew Miller of Iron City exhibited the best seedling and the best extra large flower, "Curious George."

Colby Swicord won both youth awards with his "California Sunshine" and the off-scape bloom, "Desperado Love."

Claudette Collins of Rainbow Gardens, Whigham, won the Tessie Bryant Memorial Award for the best small flower exhibited by a club member, "Sweet Kissable You."

Jackie Nicholson served as general show chairman, with Frances Gray as cochairman.
