From the Pulpit Years ago I heard someone say, "I am tired of paying taxes for people that are too lazy to work." The person who said this to me was very successful and made a lot of money. Taxes are higher today than they were then. I am sure that most of us are tired of paying taxes and the way some of our tax money is spent is disturbing. The truth is, however, we have a welfare system that prevents many people from going hungry and being homeless. The problem with our system is that when someone becomes unemployed or unable to work it takes several weeks to receive any help, and the help a person receives is far less than what most people are used to earning. When a crisis comes most of us will turn to a relative or friend. I have discovered that in most cases a relative or friend will help someone once or maybe twice, but then that is it. Many times when a person is in a crisis they find out that they have very few friends. I remember years ago when I was in the ministry up in North Georgia, I had a crisis experience and needed money. I had been told by a wealthy person in the church, that they would see that I had whatever I needed. I approached this person and was told by this person that they couldn't help. There was another person in the church who had been criticized by this person, they said this person wasn't a Christian, that helped me.
The truth is, that most of us, if we live long enough, will find a time when we need help in some form or the other. The Blakely Ministerial Association tries to help people in need.
