Recent drought may impact water levels at Walter F. George Lake

With National Safe Boating Week and Memorial Day Weekend coming up the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reminding boaters and swimmers to watch out for underwater hazards due to low lake and river levels due to the drought.

There are stumps and trees in Lake Walter F. George that were left in the reservoir to improve fishing and fish structure. There are also underwater shoals and other shallow areas that might cause boats to run aground.

Boaters should proceed with caution and use the marked navigation channels which are marked with buoys and other navigational aids and are free of hazards for the most part.

Swimmers and waders should be mindful of dropoffs. Designated swimming areas, also marked with buoys, provide a gradually increasing water depth and a sandy bottom. Beyond the buoy lines, there may be drop-offs that could pose hazards.

The reservoir level at Walter F. George Lake may drop a few feet below its full pool elevation for this time of the year. Dry conditions in the late winter and spring, along with a requirement to maintain water flow in the Apalachicola River to benefit threatened and endangered species, have led to these pool levels. Visitors are reminded that all campgrounds and day use areas remain open for use, and all boat launching ramps are accessible.

Questions should be referred to the ACF Project Management Office at 229- 768-2516. The website for Walter F. George Lake is located at http://walterfgeorge. sam.usace.army.mil/
