Johnson representing state on deck of USS Midway

CPO Shannon Johnson
There will be a gala event Memorial Day weekend aboard the USS Midway in San Diego, Calif., and Early County will be represented at the televised event.

The News learned this week that CPO Shannon C. Johnson of Blakely has been chosen to represent Georgia on stage during the inaugural Midway American Patriot Award Gala which will honor the late performer and patriot Bob Hope.

Shannon will be one of 50 servicemen and women on the USS Midway's flight deck as the Patriot Award is presented to Bob Hope's daughter.

Former Johnny Carson Tonight Show emcee Ed McMahon will lead the black-tie event. Governor and Mrs. Arnold Schwarzenegger are cochairs of the event which will be taped and broadcast the week of July 4th on NBC.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Midway Museum's No Child Left Ashore onboard math and science programs for 4-8th grade students.

Chief Petty Officer Shannon Johnson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Johnson. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1991.

Focusing on education, she is working towards a bachelor's degree in professional aeronautics.

She is presently stationed at Tacron Eleven, San Diego and slated to be the Detachment II Leading Chief aboard the USS Tarawa (LHA-1) this fall.

Chief Johnson is married to Douglas Ely and resides in Lakeside, Calif.

The USS Midway The USS Midway steamed through a 47-year career of service, commissioned in 1945 and served as a flagship in Desert Storm in 1991. No other carrier served as long as the USS Midway.

When others came home, the USS Midway remained at the "tip of the sword" on an odyssey shared by 225,000 Americans that spanned the surrender of Japan in WWII, the Cold War, Vietnam, the era of détente and Desert Storm.

No other carrier carries such a proud - many say "magical" - tradition of diligence, vigilance and mission completion. Midway Magic was real. And it continues today on her final mission as an interactive museum, tribute and education center.
