BOE considers two for school superintendent
Former ECHS principal Kenneth Hall, Dothan High principal Georgia Gary chosen from 15 applicants

At a called meeting late Friday afternoon, the Early County Board of Education announced that Georgia E. Gary and Kenneth W. Hall are under consideration for superintendent of the Early County School System.

Fifteen applicants applied for the position and the field was narrowed to four candidates for interviews with Gary and Hall chosen as finalists. The Georgia Association of School Boards directed the search for superintendent on behalf of the local school board.

Georgia E. Gary has most recently been a principal with the Dothan City School System where she served as principal of Dothan High School. She submitted her resignation effective July 1 from that position at a Monday night Dothan City Schools board meeting.

According to an article in Tuesday's Dothan Eagle, Dothan City School Board accepted Georgia Ellis Gary's resignation at its Monday night meeting. Gary will serve out the remainder of the school year as Dothan High principal.

Gary's resignation letter gave no reason for her decision to leave. Gary had been on a list of about 30 non-tenured Dothan City Schools employees who the system administration had decided not to renew for the next school year.

Gary's certification reportedly had come into question earlier this year when it was discovered that she had worked in the city school system for two-and-a-half years with no Alabama teaching certification.

After the matter came to light, Gary obtained an emergency certificate from the state which gave her until the end of May to complete work for a full certificate. According to Dell Goodwin, Dothan City Schools personnel director, Gary had been unable on more than one attempt to pass part of a skills test given to Alabama teachers. The results of Gary's final attempt remain unknown, however.

Early County BOE chairman William Davis, the local board was aware Gary would be resigning from her Dothan position and that she was having difficulty with her Alabama certification.

Gary holds a bachelor's degree from Mercer University, a master's from the University of West Georgia, an education specialist from Troy State and a doctorate from the University of Sarasota.

Gary served as the coordinator of the Ninth Grade Academy for Atlanta Public Schools, taught middle school language arts in Macon and worked with the Macon-Bibb County Education Opportunity Center as public relations coordinator.

K

enneth Hall spent 32

years in the Early County School System serving as teacher, assistant principal and principal at Early County High School.

He earned a bachelor's, master's and sixth year certificate from Troy State University.

In addition to his experience with the local school system, Hall has also served as vice president of operations for the Blakely campus of Albany Tech and, later for Bainbridge College's Blakely site. He currently serves as interim president for the Blakely- Early County Chamber of Commerce.

Hall has worked with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter since its beginning and serves on its board of directors, is a member of Blakely Rotary Club and has served on the board of directors of the Blakely Housing Authority, the advisory board of the Blakely Regional Youth Development Center and as district president of the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals. BOE chairman William Hall stated the board would make its final decision at an upcoming school board meeting.
