Elementary School says farewell to four

Retiring from Early County Elementary School, from left, are Cindy Lightsey, Dee Parker, Alma Hollinger and Mary Jane Warrick.
What is the significance of 139 years? It is the dedication of 50,735 days of faithful service. It is 1,217,640 hours of giving heart, mind and soul to the course chosen. It is 73,058,400 minutes of instant decisions, constant giving, hope, satisfaction and yes, sometimes disappointment and discouragement.

It is the gift that four unique ladies have given to the children of Early County Elementary School.

Each came from different areas and backgrounds to share their talents with the children of Early County. They will leave a void that will be impossible to fill.

Alma Shepard Hollinger has given 40 years of service and dedication to the field of education. She has had the opportunity of being a teacher, a counselor (ECMS), as well as an instructor in the TOPS program, a curriculum director, and a literacy coach with the Department of Education. Hollinger earned a bachelor of science in elementary education from Savannah State University and a master's degree in elementary education from Georgia State University. She was 1991 Teacher of the Year. She has served many places faithfully. Although she has served in many places, she began her career in Early County and she ends it here at home.

Mrs. Hollinger is married to Lester Hollinger. They have two daughters, Leslie and Tiffany and two sonsin law, Patrick and Greg. Mrs. Hollinger is looking forward to spending time with her grandchildren, Taylor and Madison, and serving God in whatever he calls her to do.

Cindy Lightsey came to Early County September 22, 1977. She earned a bachelor of science in elementary education at Troy State University in Troy. She has taught at ECES for 30 years. She has taught fourth grade language arts, fifth grade self contained, and was math and writing co-coordinator. Her dedication to Early County will be missed.

Ms. Lightsey has one daughter, Rachel. Retirement will find Ms. Lightsey planning Rachel's wedding, working in her yard, active at her church and spending time with her family. You might find her at an antique shop with her sisters.

Dee Parker has 31 years of service with 30 years of teaching second grade at ECES. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Judson College in Marion, Ala., and a master's of education from Alabama University in Tuscaloosa. She was a WTVY 1996 teacher of the month.

Ms. Parker has one daughter, Brooke. Ms. Parker loves Alabama football, remodeling her house and gardening. Retirement will find her planning Brooke's wedding and spending time with her sister. She will be returning to ECES in the fall as an intervention teacher.

Mary Jane Warrick is also a hometown girl. She has taught 38 years. She earned a bachelor of science in elementary education at Troy State University. Her awards include High School Yearbook Dedication and Who's Who Among American Teachers.

Fifth grade won't be the same without Mrs. Warrick's exuberance. Who will plan the zany musicals that entertained us all?

Mrs. Warrick is married to Al Warrick. They have two daughters, Tricia and Eve. If you are looking for Mrs.Warrick after May you will find her with her grandchildren, Ben and Anna Lane, watching the sun come up and go down over the pond.

As the sands of time trickle through the hourglass so have the years of our retirees. One can only guess the impact they have made.

Look around and see the teachers, doctors and lawyers who were students of Mrs. Hollinger, Ms. Parker, Ms. Lightsey and Mrs.Warrick.
