The Warriors' Word staff of Southwest Georgia Academy recently brought home five awards from the Georgia Scholastic Press Association's spring awards ceremony at the University of Georgia in Athens. Over 50 schools competed for various awards. Winning a first place equivalent, the paper was awarded the general excellence award for A and AA schools statewide.

The editorial staff won the all-Georgia award, another first-place equivalent, in the house editorial division for a staff editorial on the removal of soft drinks from the school campus.

Editor-in-chief Thomas Corrigan won a superior rating for his in-depth news story on the end of dial-up Internet service.

Sports editor Caitlin Cooper won one of three awards from a field of 85 applicants in the feature story category. Her winning entry was on celebrity influence on young people.

Jessica McDaniel won a superior rating for an illustration on gender segregation in schools.

Sherri Newberry serves as the newspaper's adviser.
