Lt. Col. Joe Lyle Jr. Military Lt. Col. Joe Lyle Jr., U.S. Air Force retired, of Navarre, Fla., died March 30, 2007, at Gulf Breeze Hospital in Gulf Breeze, Fla. Lt. Col. Lyle was born in Chattanooga to Joe and Sarah Stewart Lyle. He was a graduate of Chattanooga High School and served in the U. S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946. After a brief retirement from the military, he joined the United States Air Force and served honorably for 26 years until his retirement from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., in 1970. Initially a fighter pilot, he logged over 10,000 hours in 16 different types of aircraft. He concluded his military career with a helicopter tour in Vietnam as the Squadron Commander of the Jolly Green Giants rescue unit based in Thailand. For his service to his country, he was highly decorated and awarded, among many others, the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a member of Blakely First United Methodist Church while residing in Blakely. After moving to Navarre he became a founding member of Navarre United Methodist Church and served there faithfully. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Betty Adams Lyle; a daughter, Penelope Jiuditta and husband Vince of Cape Coral, Fla.; two sons, Joseph Lyle III and wife Barbara of Ridgecrest, Calif., and William Lyle and wife Ruth of Springfield, Va.; four stepchildren, Dr. Wally Robertson and wife Carol of Damascus, Sam Robertson and wife Rosalind of Lafayette, La., Glenn Robertson of Notasulga, Ala.; and Cynthia Robertson Awtrey of Birmingham, Ala.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren, with the ninth expected within the month. A memorial service was Tuesday, April 3, 2007, at the Navarre United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Morris officiating.
