Developers seeking DCA funding

The Blakely City Council met April 3 opening with a public hearing concerning a zone change on a 15-acre tract located behind 17792 Cedar Springs Road. The proposed development by Maco Construction of Clarkston, Mo., includes 35 rental homes for low income families. The Orchard Park development also includes a community center for the subdivision's residents.

The council convened following the public hearing and approved a letter of support and a resolution supporting the Orchard Park development. Maco Construction is applying for grant money through the Department of Community Affairs.

A representative of J.T. Development of Valdosta appeared before the council also requesting a letter of support and a resolution concerning the renovation of Country Homes Apartments on South Main Street. The renovation is also dependent on grant money through the DCA. The council approved the request.

Fire Chief Kenneth Jones appeared requesting the council's approval to solicit bids for an emergency siren for the city. He also asked the council to approve a plan to establish a junior firefighters program to allow youth 16-18 years old to train as volunteer firefighters.

The junior firefighters would provide support only for the fire department during actual calls and would undergo training provided by the Fire Academy. Chief Jones expects to begin with five youth in the program. The council approved the request.

City Attorney Tommy Coleman presented the city's updated election ordinance for a first reading. The city clerk reported that the city's audit was almost completed.
