SGA Warriors now 3-2 in region play SGA senior Russ Williams pitched one of the best games of his high school career Friday in Damascus as the Warriors defeated Randolph Southern School 4-0 in region baseball action. Williams dominated on the mound allowing just two singles, an infield single in the second inning and a bloop single to right field in the seventh inning. Williams walked only one batter and struck out eight in his complete game effort. SGA broke open a scoreless game in the fifth inning. With one out, Miles Lee singled and Drew Bridges walked. Williams singled to plate Lee and DJ Simpson singled in Bridges. Matthew Cleveland tripled to score pinch runner Blake Lanton, in for Williams, and put SGA up 3-0. SGA added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Chandler Ray led off with a double into the left field corner. Pinch runner Danny Doster scored SGA's final run on a ground ball hit by Lee. Simpson and Cleveland led the Warriors at the plate with 2 hits each. The Warriors hosted the Terrell Academy Eagles Thursday in a great ballgame. SGA came from behind in the last inning to clip the Eagles 8-7 in dramatic fashion. SGA grabbed the early lead as Miles Lee singled, stole second base, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Russ Williams knocked Lee in with a sacrifice fly to center field putting SGA up 1-0. Terrell pushed 3 runs across in the top of the third inning to go up 3-1. SGA answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Lee singled, stole second base and scored on a single by DJ Simpson but Terrell still held the lead, 3-2. Terrell added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go up 5-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning, just when it looked like the Eagles were on their way to victory, the Warriors fought back. Matthew Cleveland singled and Michael Fincher drew a walk leading off the inning. Chandler Ray delivered an RBI single to score Cleveland. Fincher scored on a fielder's choice by Beau Clenney. With two out, Williams hit an RBI single and Simpson drew a bases loaded walk to plate pinch runner Alan Mock and give the Warriors a 6-5 lead. Terrell took advantage of a couple of Warrior errors to score a couple runs and retake the lead 7-6. With one out, Ray got things started for SGA, reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Alex Wilson followed reaching first base on an errant throw by Terrell that allowed pinch runner Blake Lanton to move around to third base. Wilson stole second base putting the tying and winning runs at third and second base. Beau Clenney laid down a bunt to score Lanton and tie up the game at 7-7 and Wilson moved over to third base. Terrell intentionally walked Lee and that brought Drew Bridges to the plate with 2 outs and the winning run at third base. Bridges drilled a 1 ball 2 strike pitch into the right center gap plating Wilson and giving the Warriors the victory, 8-7. Beau Clenney started and pitched 6 strong innings for the Warriors and Miles Lee came in and picked up his second win of the year in relief. Alex Wilson had 3 hits, Russ Williams and Miles Lee had 2 hits each to lead the Warriors at the plate.
The Warriors record moves to 11-2 overall and 3- 2 in region play. After a little time off for spring break, SGA will get back into action Friday with a game up in Pinehurst against Fullington Academy.
