Watering tips & restrictions

With the Spring season coming to full bloom Blakely residents are reminded by Mayor Ric Hall that the following outdoor watering restrictions will be in effect again this year.

The non-drought restrictions in place allow residential outdoor watering between 12 midnight and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 12 midnight as follows:

Odd-numbered addresses water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Even-numbered addresses water on Mondays,Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is a statewide watering ban on Fridays.

The only exception to the restrictions is watering of personal food gardens.

More strict restrictions are included in the ordinance in the event of state declared drought conditions. Citizens are asked to observe the restrictions. Call 723-3677 for more information.

+ Set your sprinkler low to the ground (instead of high in the air). More water will reach the roots

+ Water early in the morning, between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. That is when plants are ready to receive the water, and it will not be lost to evaporation (like it will in the heat of the day).

+ Instead of watering every other day, water for two hours once a week or every two weeks. Your plants only need one inch every seven to ten days to stay healthy.

+ Mulch heavily with leaf litter or store-bought pine bark. The covering at the base of plants and trees will help the soil retain water.

+ Be choosy! Water areas where the plants are wilted and pay more attention to the trees and shrubs than with annuals and perennials. Beware of Over-Watering!

Over-watering encourages shallow root growth, which causes grass to lose its ability to survive drought.

More Georgia lawns were damaged from over-watering during the 1988 Georgia drought, than from lack of water.

As much as 60 percent of all household water use during the summer months is used outdoors for landscape purposes!
