A STEERING committee dedicated to establishing a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity elected its first board of directors and slate of officers last week. Early County High School teacher David Allen was elected president; Chris-tine Herndon, secretary; and ECHS principal Kenneth Hall, treasurer.

WINNERS of the 1997 King Cotton Horseshow Pageant are: Stephanie Michelle Aikin, Princess; Dallas Anne Knox, Little Miss Princess; Amanda Lauren Crocker, Jr. Miss; and Jessica Elaine Engram, Queen.

MR. AND Mrs. Woodie Warr of Bainbridge proudly announce the birth of their son, Brenton Woodfin Warr Jr., born March 10, 1997, at Bainbridge Memorial. He weighed 8 pounds 1 ounce and was 20 inches long.

April 1, 1982

BLAKELY'S newly elected mayor, Billy Fleming, took office Wednesday of last week after being sworn in by City Recorder Joanne Moulton.

CAROLYN Camille Houston and Graham Thomas Harvin have completed plans for their April 10 wedding ceremony.

THE STUDENTS of the month for March at Early County High School were Kathleen Hall and Mack Thomas.

MR. AND MRS. Don McCorkle of Blakely proudly announce the arrival of a baby girl, Jennifer Tracie, March 25, 1982, at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. She weighed 7 pounds 13 and 1/2 ounces.

50 YEARS AGO

April 4, 1957 AT THE FIRST meeting of the Early County Brucellosis Control Committee held Monday night in the city hall, A.J. Gentry was elected committee chairman.

THE EARLY County Junior Chamber of Commerce was organized at a meeting held here the past week. Officers elected were: Edsel Bryan, president; Lyle McNeal, vice president; and J.T. Manry, sercretary-treasurer.

THREE members of the Blakely Pilot Club will attend the District One convention of Pilot Club International which is being held in Atlanta April 5 through April 7. Those attending are Miss Sarah E. Lewis, president-elect, Mrs. Iva Herring and Mrs. C.W. Lay.

BEN HUNT, who graduates from North Georgia College in Dahlonega this summer, has recently been admitted to the Georgia Medical College and will transfer there upon the completion of his work at NGC. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Hunt.

MISS JEAN Willis, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Willis, and John Wesley Harris, son of Mrs. John Lewis Harris and the late Mr. Harris, were married in an impressive ceremony Saturday afternoon, March 30, at 6 o'clock, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Willis.

March 31, 1932

THE BLAKELY Beginner's Band, under the direction of Hal Middleton, held its first group rehearsal last Thursday night after eight weeks of intense tutoring.

THE BOBCATS of Blakely High won the first game of baseball season last Friday when they defeated Cuthbert 7 to 2.

12,728 BALES of cotton were ginned in Early County from the crop of 1931, final figures show.

A BABY GIRL arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Theo Williams some two weeks ago.

MR. JOSEPH Freeman lost his home and most of its contents by fire early Sunday morning.

MR. AND MRS. Ben Johnston of Cincinnati and Mrs. D.B. Thompson, Miss Monette Thompson and Drew Thompson Jr. of Milledgeville, were visitors in the city Saturday and Sunday and were guests of Mr. and Mrs. D.M. Wade.

MISSES EVA HILL and Willie Mae Johnson have returned from a visit to Cuthbert.

DR. T.M. HOWARD and Dr. W.B. Standifer left Saturday for Apalachicola.

MR. SAM Powell makes his debut in the mercantile business of Blakely this week.

HENRY Wadsworth Longfellow, the greatest American poet died in Cambridge, Mass., on the afternoon of March 24.
