Postal problems frustrating (Editor's note: David Gustafson wrote the following editorial to his readers because of the poor out-ofstate delivery his subscribers were experiencing. It is a problem our readers also experience. We hope this answers some questions concerning delivery problems.) Last May, the U.S. Postal Service changed the way out-of-state newspapers are delivered. I could go into specific detail about the change and would be glad to go over it personally with any of you, but for the sake of trying not to put you to sleep, I'll summarize. The bottom line is that the federal government dreamed up a way to improve delivery time to out-of-state newspaper subscribers and instead made things worse. Much worse. I realize it's hard to believe the federal government could do such a thing, but it's true. The problem doesn't lie on the local level, but instead at the regional distribution centers, where out-of-state mail is sorted. In some cases, it's taking two weeks or more for the Highlander to travel from the post office in Rangeley to readers in states as close as Massachusetts. And it's not just us. Other newspapers are experiencing the same delays, and the National Newspaper Associaiton, as well as the New England and Maine Press Associations, has taken steps to seek a resolution with postal officials. We received calls and emails and letters from many of you sharing your frustration about the delays, and please understand that we share that frustration. We pay the Postal Service a significant amount of money each month to mail the newspaper to our subscribers, and we would like to be able to assure you that it's being delivered in the most efficient way possible. If you live out-of-state, I hope that in the coming months you'll see an improvement in the amount of time it takes for the Highlander to arrive in your mailboxes.
And if you live in Rangeley all year long, count your blessings. You're lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful places in all of New England - probably even the entire U.S.
