SGA baseball team wins tournament
By Paul Bridges Sports Writer

Southwest Georgia Academy's baseball team took home the trophy at the Ashford Invitational with wins over Autauga Christian and Northside Methodist.
The SGA Warrior baseball team completed a busy week of baseball Saturday by defeating Autauga Christian from Prattville, Ala., 2-1 and Northside Methodist from Dothan 19- 14 to win the Ashford Invitational Baseball Tournament. SGA started the week off by defeating Terrell Academy 10-4 Monday in Dawson. The Warriors dropped a hard fought region game to Brookwood in Damascus Friday by a score of 4-3.

It was cold and windy Saturday in Ashford and SGA's Drew Bridges (3-0) was locked in a pitchers duel with Autauga's Justin Tanner. Autauga got two runners on in the first inning and got the bases loaded in the second inning but Bridges was able to wiggle out of the jams without allowing any runners to score. Michael Fincher scored to put the Warriors up 1-0 in the fourth inning. SGA went up 2-0 in the sixth inning on a Russ Williams RBI single. Bridges shut Autauga down in the third through the sixth inning but ran into another jam in the bottom of the seventh. Autauga scored a run and had the bases loaded but Bridges induced a ground ball from the Autauga batter to end the game with SGA winning 2- 1.

In the championship game, SGA jumped on Northside Methodist early and coasted to an easy win. The Warriors scored 3 runs in the second inning, 1 in the third inning, and broke the game open with 9 in the fourth and 5 more runs in the fifth inning. Alex Wilson led the Warriors at the plate going 3 for 3 with a HR, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored. Miles Lee, Drew Bridges, Matthew Cleveland and Alan Mock all had multiple hits for SGA. Beau Clenney (1-0) started on the mound for SGA and picked up his first win of the season.

On Monday in Dawson, SGA won an exciting game against a good Terrell Academy team. Miles Lee led off the game for SGA with a single, stole second base, and scored the game's first run on a RBI single by Drew Bridges. Chandler Ray walked and came around to score on a Russ Williams' RBI single to put SGA up 2-0 in the second inning. Ray put SGA up 3-0 in the third inning, scoring on a RBI double by Alex Wilson. Terrell came back to tie the game up with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. SGA grabbed the lead right back with a run in the top of the fourth inning. SGA blew a close game open by scoring 6 runs in the top of the seventh inning to go up 10-3. Lee had a great day at the plate for SGA with a single, 2 doubles, 2 walks, 5 stolen bases, scored 3 runs, and one RBI. Matthew Cleveland and Michael Fincher had 2 hits each for the Warriors. Bridges pitched the complete game for the Warriors striking out eight batters and walking none while picking up his second win of the season.

On Friday, SGA played Brookwood in a GISA region 3AA showdown. Brookwood jumped out to an early lead with 3 runs in the top of the first inning. Brookwood extended their lead to 4-0 with a run in the top of the fifth inning. SGA got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the inning. Alex Wilson scored the Warriors' first run on a Miles Lee single. With SGA trailing 4-1, the Warriors made things exciting in their last at bat. The Warriors loaded the bases and Michael Fincher drove in 2 runs with a single to right field to make the score 4-3. SGA had the tying run at third base with 2 outs. The ball got away from the Brookwood catcher and the SGA runner broke for the plate but was called out on a very close play at the plate to end the game. Russ Williams (2-1) pitched a great game in a losing effort for the Warriors.

SGA's record moves to 6-1 on the year. The Warriors continue region play with a game against Valwood in Damascus at 4 p.m. Tuesday. SGA has a doubleheader at home Saturday against Northside Methodist with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
