City hears proposed development

The Blakely City Council held a public hearing related to a zone change request prior to convening their March 6 council meeting.

Mike Altman of Hammond Development addressed the council in connection with the request to change the zoning of 23 acres from Ag to R2. A 71-home housing development is being proposed for the property which is located between North Church Street and Dean Avenue.

The council convened its March meeting following the public hearing. Councilman Torre Mills made a motion to approve the zoning change for the North Church property. The motion carried.

Altman discussed the housing development and asked the council to consider a resolution supporting the project. Councilman Mills moved to adopt such resolution. The motion carried.

Paul Simonton addressed the council concerning the watershed assessment and Wanda Hudson discussed the city's proposed 2007 CDBG grant project which is planned to continue work on city sewage projects. Hudson also discussed a CDBG EIP grant. The council approved both projects and approved Hudson as grant administrator on both projects and Poly Engineer-ing as the engineering firm on the CDBG grant.

The council also approved a proposal to apply for an Assistance to Firefighters grant to provide emergency generators for the city's wells. A bid from Ingram Equipment Co. was accepted for a garbage truck and a bid from Hattaway Motor Company was accepted for a pickup truck.

Jack Watson appeared to discuss a storage building project on property on Damascus Road and the council approved a beer license for Willie Cawthon Jr.

The council approved a city court probation services agreement and approved a low bid of 5.25 percent by Commercial State Bank for a tax anticipation loan for the city.

The city clerk reported that the civic center floor had been painted and that quotes on curtains were solicited. The clerk also announced the city's audit was underway.

The council also discussed re-establishing a civic center board, a land donation to 2055, speed bumps on several city streets, emergency sirens, council and mayor pay increases, and street name changes for Dumas Avenue and Chattahoochee Street.
