The third annual Unsung Hero Banquet, sponsored by the Freedom Council, was a huge success. Congressman Sanford Bishop of the Second Congressional District was the distinguished guest speaker for the event held Feb. 24.

The Freedom Council spotlighted three unsung heroes this year: Helen Fields, Rayfield Ransom, and Isabella Daniels Holston. Fields was spotlighted for her mentoring of young women in Early County; Ransom for his community organizing and extensive involvment in the NAACP; and Holston for her far-reaching travels as an Olympic bronze medalwinning sprinter in Melbourne, Australia in 1956.

Original poetry and inspirational singing entertained all in attendance. Also, each Unsung Hero gave words of thanks and appreciation as they received their awards. Congressman Bishop presented additional awards to this year's honorees. Each honoree received a "Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition" signed by the congressman.
