'Stories' do come to life

Some 25 or 30 years ago on my way into a snow covered Washington D.C. the driver of the airport van noted that we were approaching the bridge that the airliner taking off from nearby National Airport crashed into a few days earlier as it plunged into the Potomac River.

The TV air waves and front pages of the daily papers had been full of images and stories in the aftermath of the deadly crash caused by icing in blizzard conditions.

The "story" became much more real. While the wreckage and rescue crews were gone, the pain and agony could still be felt. It was different being there opposed to watching on TV.

Same feeling some years later traveling through Oklahoma City.

It has been difficult watching the "stories" of tragedy that gripped the nation the last few days in Enterprise, Americus and Baker County after deadly storms left their paths of devastation last Thursday.

Agony further gripped the nation as the death toll mounted from the bus crash on I-75 in Atlanta. Sadly, the whole country now knows the whereabouts of Bluffton University.

Our community, along with a number of others, is thankful the national news media wasn't explaining where Blakely, Ga., was on the map. The deadly storms had somehow skirted by on both sides of us.

It will only be a matter of time - those tragedies were close to home. When I pass through Baker County, the next time I go to Enterprise, Americus and Atlanta, the pain and agony of those "stories" will be felt.
