Falconer Steve Hein to visit ECES and CCMS
The Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District sponsors a unique learning opportunity for students in the area of wildlife education. The district has partnered with Georgia Southern University's Center for Wildlife Education to bring the outdoors to the classroom. Steve Hein is the director for the Center and conducts these "Birds of Prey" demonstrations. Steve holds state and federal permits for falconry and the rehabilitation of raptors. "As a master falconer, I view falconry not only as an art form, but the most highly evolved form of bird watching." In 1991, Steve was given the opportunity to combine his talents to develop the Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q Ball, Jr. Raptor Center on the campus of Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. "If we are to create a positive impact for the environment, we must touch the hearts of our youth." The Center for Wildlife Education provides live wildlife encounters to approximately 40,000 participants each year. Eagles, hawks, owls and falcons are perched in natural habitats along a scenic walkway. The center is home to approximately 30 birds of prey representing 17 species, and has three licensed falconers. Raptor Watch, an opportunity to spend a day in the field with the falconers, is a regular program at the center. Flint River District Chairman Marty Mc- Lendon stated that "the Flint River District is continuously working with schools, landowners, federal and state agencies as well as developers in promoting and providing for conservation measures. The district believes that it is important that our youth be educated to the beauty and wonder of our resources." The Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District is a state agency made up of one elected and one appointed member from Baker, Calhoun, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Miller, Mitchell, and Seminole counties. Assisting the district is the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service. The group will visit Early County Elementary School and Baconton Charter School March 8, and Calhoun County Middle School March 9.
