The Cat in the Hat to visit Early County.

The National Education Association will sponsor "Read Across America" Friday, March 2. This marks the 10th anniversary for "Read Across America," which has become the nation's largest reading event. States, counties and communities all across the nation will turn their attention to literacy and NEA's effort to "build a nation of readers."

Several local events will celebrate "Read Across America." Children in Pre- K and Head Start will have a birthday party at Lucy Hilton Maddox Memorial Library for the Cat in the Hat, who turns 50 this year.

The Cat himself will make appearances there and at Early County Elementary School. Students in the 21st Century afterschool program will have a Cat in the Hat festival including crafts, games and storytelling. Also, local volunteers have offered to come in and read to classes at the school.

This is an event that everyone can be a part of. Spend some time reading to children or enjoying a book yourself. Be a part of "Read Across America."
