Lady Warriors march to state playoffs
The Lady Warriors jumped on Valwood early and never let up. SGA held a 24-6 first quarter lead and destroyed any Valwood hopes of a comeback by putting 21 points on the scoreboard in the third quarter. The Lady Warriors had a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures, Lindsay Buckhalter and Kristi Williams with 14 each and Allison Hutchins and Caitlin Cooper with 10 each. Ashley Tedder added 6, Jana Sizemore 4, Fallon Askew and Jodi Harris 2 points each. In the boys' game, the Warriors were locked in a great battle with Tift Area. The game was close throughout. Tift Area led 12-10 after one quarter. Both teams scored 16 points in the second quarter giving Tift a 28-26 lead at the half. The game was knotted up 32-32 after three quarters. Tift made a shot under the basket to go up 45-44 with 6 seconds left in the game. The Warriors got the ball down the court and got an open shot off from the wing from about 8 feet just before the buzzer sounded but it bounced off the rim leaving SGA 1 point short. Alex Wilson and Drew Bridges led the Warriors' scoring with 14 and 11 points respectively. Beau Clenney and Michael Fincher added 8 points each, Russ Williams 2 and Jason Dean 1 point. With the loss, the Warriors' season comes to an end. The Warriors finish with a record of 9 wins and 12 losses, 6 of those losses by 3 points or less. SGA will lose two players to graduation in Russ Williams and DJ Simpson. Although the seniors will surely be missed, with six juniors and several key underclassmen returning, next year looks to be a very promising one for Coach Foster and the Warriors. Thursday night the Lady Warriors played the No. 1 seeded team from Brookwood. The Lady Warriors could not get anything going offensively and fell to Brookwood 46-29. SGA scored only 2 first quarter points and 8 second quarter points. Although they struggled on offense, by playing well defensively they only trailed Brookwood 23-10 at halftime. The Lady Warriors got their offense going a bit late in the game but it was a case of too little, too late. Lindsay Buckhalter led the team in scoring with 9 points. Allison Hutchins added 8, Kristi Williams 4, Caitlin Cooper and Ashley Tedder 3 each, Casey Foster 2 points. The Lady Warriors played Randolph Southern in the consolation game Friday night to determine the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds from the region for the state tournament. Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter and it ended with the score tied at 4-4. RSS exploded in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Warriors 21-8 to take a 25- 12 halftime lead. The Lady Warriors responded in the third quarter outscoring RSS 18-10 to only trail 35- 30. RSS was able to hang on late and defeated SGA 49-43. Allison Hutchins had another big night leading the Lady Warriors in scoring with 18 points. Ashley Tedder had 8, Caitlin Cooper 6, Lindsay Buckhalter and Kyndall Andrews 5 each, and Kristi Williams 1 point.
The Lady Warriors begin their march through the state tournament as the No. 4 seed out of region 3AA. They will face a very good Gatewood team, the No.1 seed from region 1AA. The first round of the state tournament will be held at ABAC in Tifton. The Lady Warriors will play Wednesday with tip off set for 7 p.m.
