Literacy partners raise $400,000

The Southwest Georgia Certified Literate Community Program has raised over $400,000 the last two years to improve the literacy level of the region. CLCP is a statewide initiative that mobilizes communities to involve business, education and government in addressing the issues surrounding low literacy rates.

These funds have been raised by county and city support, private and corporate donors, spelling bees, golf tournaments and foundation grants. Projects have included GED scholarships ($65 for complete test), dictionaries for third graders and thesauruses for ninth graders, books for babies and adminstrative costs for programs.

Southwest Georgia CLCP believes that when adults are actively engaged in education, their children are more likely to be successful in school; believes that the key to economic development in this region is to improve the employablilty of workers; and believes that we can change the culture of our counties to better value education at all ages.
