Royal named consultant of the year

Jack Royal
When it comes to being an effective cotton consultant, many traits are necessary to survive in today's agricultural environment.

One of the most important traits might be patience, which best describes the way cotton consultant Jack Royal has conducted his thriving business since 1978.

The longtime resident of Leary methodically collects data and studies the fields of his customers. He won't make recommendations until he completely understands the profile of a farm.

Jack's wife, Sheryl, assists in the consulting business. His son, Brad, and daughters, Jamie and Stacie, previously helped out.

Even when profit margins are thin and weather conditions seem to work against farmers, Jack has always utilized his experience to work with customers and find a way to deal with these ever-present challenges.

How else has this veteran consultant showcased his patience?

Since this is the first time that a Georgian has been selected as cotton consultant of the year, you could say that Jack's peers have honored a man whose work was long overdue for recognition. It took 26 years, but Jack figures it was worth the wait.

Jack has consulted in south Georgia since 1978 and has retained many of his original clients.

A charter member of the Georgia association of professional agricultural consultants, he has served two terms as GAPAC president and is currently serving as membership chairman.

He helped promote the resurgence of cotton planting in Georgia in the late 1980s and the early 1990s by holding cotton production meetings for new producers.

Jack offers advice on 15,000 cotton acres, 9,000 to 12,000 peanut acres and 2,500 corn acres.

"There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle when you talk about cotton's comeback here in South Georgia. And Jack Royal is one of those important pieces," states Bob McLendon of Leary.

"He's been a major contributor to our success in cotton production, and I'm proud to call him my consultant and friend."

"Jack started helping us back in 1980 and we have a great working relationship with each other," states Nelson Hattaway of Blakely.

"I give Jack a lot of the credit for any success we've had on our farm through the years. We rely on his advice, and he works well with everybody in our operation, including my son Sam.We couldn't be happier that Jack has won this award."

Syngenta Crop Protection and Cotton Farming named Jack Royal as the 2006 cotton consultant of the year.
