Busy city council meeting Garbage trucks, beer licenses and ordinance updates gave the Blakely City Council a full agenda at their Feb. 5 meeting at the City Annex. The council approved a request to seek bids for a new garbage truck. The item is in the 2007 budget. The council also approved a request to seek bids for a pickup truck for the water treatment plant. The treatment plant's current truck was due to be replaced sometime this year, but heavy damage from a collision with a deer pushed the item higher on the city's priority list. A beer license was approved for HYCS Inc. and a beer license for Willie Cawthon Jr. was tabled pending additional information from the Department of Public Safety. The city attorney presented the city's updated alcohol ordinance for a second reading and adoption. The council adopted the ordinance with a correction in one fee amount. The council also approved a resolution granting non-exclusive easement to Gerald Bruner to allow him to access the rear of his property on Flowers Drive. The city clerk reported the playground on Howell Avenue was almost completed and should be ready by spring. The council asked the clerk to seek bids for a tax anticipation note in the amount of $400,000. The council approved a safety policy statement which allows for establishing safety meetings for all departments as part of a risk management process to lower worker's compensation costs. An intergovernmental agreement with the county for use of the county's property on the east side of the fire station was approved. The fire department will locate its new fire training house on the property. The council okayed a request to place curtains on the stage area at the civic center and discussed painting the floor of the facility.
Owners of property on Barton Street addressed the council concerning a sewage back-up into the property on Friday, Feb. 9.
