IN AN unanimous decision Tuesday morning, the Early County Board of Education voted to adopt an extended calendar, which shortens the summer break by two weeks, but offers more breaks during the school year and an early graduation.

SUPERINTENDENT Ric Hall presented the first place trophy to spelling bee winner Marquita Gilbert, second place to Daniel Ragan, and third to Joanna Smith.

AUDREY CROCKER was elected class president in Mrs. Palmer's third grade classes' mock election after campaigning for one week and presenting a speech to the class.

Feb. 11, 1982

THE EARLY County Board of Education named Ric Hall athletic director and head football coach at Early County High School this week.

MR. AND MRS. Bill Cleveland proudly announce the birth of a daughter, Julie, born Jan. 29 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan.

STUDENTS of the month for January at Early County High School were Rhonda Reddick and Don Hutchins.

THREE Southern Railway engines and four boxcars loaded with rolls of paper from Great Southern Paper Co. derailed Thursday morning.

4-H'ERS Katrina Smith and Scott Coleman earned first and third place honors at the recent region Project Acheivement competition. 50 YEARS AGO

Feb. 14, 1957

THE ELLA Jones PTA will meet at the Blakely- Union School auditorium Tuesday evening, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m., Mrs. Mary Jane Hammock, president, presiding.

BLAKELY'S WOMAN of the year for 1957 is Mrs. J.A. Hammock, Early County visiting teacher, who received the award Tuesday night at the Annual Pilot Club of Blakely's annual bosses' night party and banquet.

MR. WILSON Davenport, of Gainesville, Fla., spent several days here the past week with his mother, Mrs. T.H. Davenport.

MR. AND Mrs. R.C. Singletary Jr. are now occupying their beautiful new home, located west of highway 27 north of Mill Creek.

Feb. 11, 1932

MISS SARAH Beckham became the bride of Mr. Rufus B. Jennings Wednesday afternoon, the ceremony taking place at the Methodist Church with the Rev. O.B. Chester officiating.

BLAKELY friends of Miss Inez Burnan, who is attending Florida State College for Women at Tallahassee, will be interested to learn that she has been awarded the annual sorority scholarship of that school.

MR. AND MRS. Alvin Day announce the birth of a daughter on Feb. 5. She has been named Vivian Juanita.

MISS MILDRED Tarver has returned to Sale City, where she is a member of the public school faculty. Her friends are delighted that her condition is greatly improved.
