Mumbles
"That stretch of four-laning is a symbol of hope for this community. "But, there is something bad wrong. The intersections along the bypass - at least several of them - are death traps. And, as important as the four-laning of U.S. 27 is to the future of this community, it's not worth sacrificing a single life. I have been involved with government budgets long enough to understand financial constraints. But, this is one of those situations where the money be damned - just fix it!" - Mumbles, May 25,1998. That column was prompted by a tragic accident on the bypass. A little over a year later, on Aug. 18, after another fatal accident I wrote "I don't know what it's going to take to "fix" those intersections or how long it will take to get the attention of the powers who can fix them." Nine years have passed and Sunday two more lives were lost in an accident that didn't have to happen. Word of the accident didn't reach me until almost an hour and a half after it happened. Darkness had fallen over the scene of the accident, but it was well lit with several powerful lights. I don't remember any sounds as I walked through the scattered wreckage.
A feeling kept gnawing inside of me that I had felt somewhere before. I've been on the scene of too many terrible tragedies. But, only one stirred the same emotion. I finally figured out which it was - the Bluffton murders. I also kept saying that night, "This didn't have to happen!"
