Hutchins leads Lady Warriors to victory
Hutchins scored 9 points in the first quarter and 11 in the second quarter as the Lady Warriors jumped out to a 32-19 halftime lead. The teams traded baskets in the third quarter but the Lady Warriors finished the game strong by outscoring RSS 12-4 in the final quarter as they cruised to victory, 51-32. Hutchins led all scorers with 27 points. Caitlin Cooper added 10, Lindsay Buckhalter 6, Kristi Williams 5, Ashley Tedder 2 and Casey Foster 1 point. In the boys' game, Beau Clenney knocked down a couple of 3-point baskets early that enabled SGA to grab an 11-9 first quarter lead. RSS came back and took a 20-16 lead into halftime. RSS outscored SGA 15-14 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 35- 30. SGA came back to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, 40-40. RSS scored first in the overtime period but SGA reeled off 5 unanswered points and held on for the 45-42 victory. Beau Clenney led the way for SGA with 15 points. Michael Fincher had 11, Alex Wilson 9, Russ Williams 5, Drew Bridges 3, and Jason Dean 2 points. It was senior night in Damascus Friday and the senior basketball players, cheerleaders, and their parents were recognized for their achievements at SGA. The Lady Warriors struggled in the first half of play against the Valwood Lady Valiants. SGA led 7-6 after one quarter but trailed 17- 16 at the half. Caitlin Cooper and Allison Hutchins scored 8 points each in the third quarter to power SGA to a 35-25 lead. Just when it looked like SGA had things under control, Valwood hit a few big shots and the Lady Warriors had to hang on to pull out the region win, 45- 42. Caitlin Cooper led SGA scoring 18 points. Allison Hutchins followed with 9, Casey Foster 5, Lindsay Buckhalter and Kyndal Andrews 4 each, Ashley Tedder 3 and Jodi Harris 2 points. The Warriors played hard but suffered a heartbreaking loss. SGA fell behind 10-7 after one quarter and trailed 17-16 at the half. The Warriors appeared to take control of the game in the third quarter. Behind Michael Fincher's 8 points, SGA outscored Valwood 16-8 in the quarter to take a 33-24 lead. Valwood came back in the fourth quarter and took the lead for good with just over a minute left in the game. SGA got off what would have been a 3- pointer for the tie but it would not go down and Valwoood won, 49-46. Michael Fincher led a balanced Warrior scoring effort with 10 points. Drew Bridges and Alex Wilson had 9 each, Russ Williams 8, Beau Clenney and Jason Dean 5 points each. SGA had two non-region games last week as well. Monday the Lady Warriors lost to Terrell 67-45. Freshman Kyndal Andrews led SGA in scoring with 13 points. The Warriors lost to Terrell as well but in heartbreak fashion, 40-38. Saturday SGA traveled to Crisp Academy and the Lady Warriors rolled over Crisp 38-27. The Warriors were down 16 points, 34- 18, to Crisp after three quarters but Beau Clenney led the Warriors on a dramatic comeback attempt. Clenney, who hit seven 3- point baskets in the game, hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Warriors cut Crisp's lead to a single point in the game's frantic final minute of play before eventually falling to Crisp 47-44.
SGA finishes its regular season on the road with region games against Brookwood Tuesday and a non-region game at Fullington on Friday.
