Georgia PGA honors Peters
The PGA established the Distinguished Service Award in 2000. It is presented annually to an individual who has had significant impact on the game of golf in the state by promoting interest and involvement through service to the game. The prestigious award was presented this past October during the Georgia PGA Annual Business Meeting and Education Seminar at Idle Hour Club in Macon. Peters' award is featured in the January/February issue of GSGA's Golf Georgia magazine. Peters, an avid golfer since the construction of the Blakely Town and Country Club in the 1950s, began a volunteer career at the Georgia State Golf Association serving on the rules committee in 1973. He served as GSGA president from 1980 to 1982. While president he acquired state qualifying events for the USGA and implemented the USGA-GHIN Handicap System in Georgia. While serving as the 1983 president of the Georgia Junior Golf Foundation, he founded the Junior Golf Academy. He has been recognized as a rules expert, having served as a volunteer rules official for over 30 years, and has been invited by the USGA to serve as a rules official at the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur. He received a 1985 Service to Sports citation from the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the GSGA Presidents' Awards for the promotion of golf in 1975 and again in 1993. He was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame January 9, 1993, and is now one of 77 members.
He is an honorary vice-president of the Georgia PGA and in 1996 was elected as a lifetime honorary member of the Georgia PGA.
