Mumbles
That story came to mind when I turned to page 20 in this month's Georgia Golf magazine. I see Billy Peters several times a week. He usually greets me by saying "Hello, Mayor." It's been almost 25 years since I was mayor. Not once has he ever mentioned his accomplishments or honors over the years as result of his service to the Georgia State Golf Association, amateur golf and junior golfers in Georgia. About 14 years ago he was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame in Augusta. He never mentioned it. Someone else told me about it months later. Same thing this week. As I was reading the GSGA magazine, Georgia Golf, I turned the page and saw Peter's picture with the headline, "Peters' Distinguished Service honored by Georgia PGA." He hadn't mentioned a word about receiving one of the most coveted honors a golfer could receive. It was only fitting when I began my research for the front page article that the first thing I came across was a photo of Billy and Pete Cox kneeling in front of a group of junior golfers that had just defeated their South Carolina peers in the annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match.
And, can anyone guess who the GSGA-GPGA Challenge Cup is named after? That's right, it's the "Billy Peters Cup" the amateurs are competing for when they go up against the pro golfers.
