Taylor sentenced to life for Lucy Major murder

Thaddeous Lee Taylor, 24, was sentenced to life in prison last week by Superior Court Judge Joe Bishop for the January 2006 murder of Lucy Major.

Taylor's life sentence followed a plea of guilty to malice murder and to armed robbery, an offensefor which he was also sentenced to 10 years in prison. The case was handled by District Attorney Charles Ferguson.

The community was shocked and saddened last January with the news that Lucy Major, a popular local resident, had been murdered. Mrs. Major is remembered as an energetic community volunteer active in many civic causes. She was a member of the Blakely City Planning Commission. She was a candidate for mayor in the city's last mayoral election and was manager of the local Hardee's for many years.

Major was reported missing from her Flowers Drive home Jan. 20 by her sister, Annette Bankston. Mrs. Bankston's daughter, India, had returned home from schoolthat day and found blood in the house and both her aunt and her aunt's car gone.

Authorities received a tip at the crime scene of a possible suspect, Thad Taylor, and where he might be located in Dothan. Dothan Police took Taylor into custody and located the victim's vehicle at Taylor's girlfriend's apartment.

Taylor gave authorities a statement about the murder and where Major's body was located. The body was located the next day in a ravine on a dirt road off County Road 85 in Alabama.

At the time of the crime, Taylor was a first offender on probation for burglary. Taylor was also resentenced last week for that crime and received 20 years to be served concurrently.
