SGA splits region games
In SGA's loss to Brookwood Tuesday, the Lady Warriors fell behind early 10-0 and were never able to recover against the top team in the region. Brookwood girls led 15-7 after one quarter and expanded their lead to 29- 13 by halftime. The Lady Warriors outscored Brookwood 24-21 in the second half but it was not enough to get out of the hole they had dug for themselves in the first half. The Lady Warriors lost 50-37. Allison Hutchins was the only Lady Warrior in double figures with 12 points. Lindsay Buckhalter had her best game of the season with 8 points. Caitlin Cooper and Kristi Williams added 6 each, Casey Foster and Kyndal Andrews 2 each, and Kayla Craft 1 point. The boys' game went back and forth. Brookwood held a 15-13 lead after the first quarter. SGA came back and outscored Brookwood 11-4 in the second quarter to take a 24-19 halftime lead. It appeared as though SGA had taken control of the game and the Warriors were headed for victory. But the Warriors came out the second half ice cold. As the old expression goes, the Warriors could not buy a basket in the third quarter. Brookwood outscored SGA 9-0 in the third quarter taking a 28-24 lead. SGA did not break back into the scoring column until the 4:28 mark of the fourth quarter. SGA battled Brookwood to the end but Brookwood hit their foul shots late and won 38-32. Beau Clenney led the Warriors scoring with 12 points. Alex Wilson added 6, Michael Fincher and Blake Shepard 5 each, Russ Williams 3 and Jason Dean 1 point. SGA traveled to Valdosta Friday to play Valwood in region play. It was a long trip over but well worth it as both SGA teams came home with a win. Although the Lady Warriors struggled on offense all night, they made enough plays on both ends of the court to come away with a 32-25 victory. SGA led 8-3 after one quarter and 13-11 at the half. Allison Hutchins scored 6 third quarter points to help SGA extend their lead to 25-19 after three quarters. SGA outscored Valwood 7-6 in the final frame to seal up the win. Hutchins was once again the Lady Warriors leading scorer with 10 points. Kristi Williams added 7, Casey Foster and Jodi Harris 4 each, Lindsay Buckhalter, Caitlin Cooper, and Ashley Tedder 2 each and Kyndal Andrews 1 point. In the boys' game, the Warriors played one of their best games of the year defeating a good Valwood team 52-48. Valwood jumped out to an early 9-2 lead but SGA closed the quarter well and only trailed 11-8 after one quarter. SGA continued to roll in the second quarter and outscored Valwood 18- 13 to take a 26-24 halftime lead. Jason Dean's 10 first half points helped power SGA's offense in the first half. The third quarter was a defensive struggle that SGA won 9-7 giving the Warriors a 35-31 lead. SGA continued to expand their lead in the fourth quarter. Drew Bridges hit a 3-pointer with a couple minutes left on the clock to give SGA a 12 point lead. The 12 point lead seemed like a safe one at the time but it wasn't. Like all good teams, Valwood did not quit. They came storming back but the Warriors were able to hit enough of their foul shots to hold Valwood off and preserve the win, 52-48. Jason Dean led a balanced Warrior offense with a career best 14 points. Michael Fincher and Alex Wilson were in double figures also with 12 and 11 points respectively. Drew Bridges had 8 points, all in the fourth quarter. Russ Williams added 4 and Beau Clenney 3 points. The Lady Warriors are 2- 2 in the region and 7-5 overall while the Warriors are 1- 3 in the region and 7-5 overall. SGA has a non-region game in Damascus Tuesday against Fullington and travel to Chula to face Tift Area in a region contest Friday night.
