City digs

City of Blakely workers are in the process of replacing old terra cotta sewer lines, stormwater drains and manholes on River Street and Jefferson Avenue. The work is being made possible by a $318,000 Community Development Block Grant.

The project starts at the intersection of River and South Church streets extending to the intersection of River and Jefferson. The line will be replaced south on Jefferson to the "Big Big Ditch."

The old sewer lines are plagued with leaks and infiltration of rain and ground water in many parts of town. The section being replaced was the source of major infiltration, however, which causes overflow capacities at the city's sewerage treatment plant during periods of heavy rainfall.

As part of the project, the city also plans to clean out the "Big Big Ditch"from Jefferson to Robinson Avenue.
