Legislators returned to Atlanta this week for the 2007 session of the Georgia General Assembly. Monday was a day of swearing in at the Capitol and inaugurations for Gov. Sonny Perdue and Lt. Governor Casey Cagle.

Gov. Perdue is scheduled to give his state of the state address today at the Capitol. During his remarks Tuesday morning at the Georgia Chamber of Commerce Eggs and Issues Breakfast, he stated that one of his top priorities would be to slow down drivers on Georgia's highways. He noted that 20 percent of the state's 1,744 traffic fatalities in 2005 were due to excessive speed. Trauma care costs $7.85 billion per year.

Legislation is expected raising fines and other penalties against drivers stopped going over 85 mph on any Georgia road and over 75 mph on two-lane highways.

The News will keep readers informed of the issues that affect them most during the session.
Rep. Gerald Greene, Room 611, Coverdell Legislative Office Building, Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Phone: 404.656.0314 Fax: 229-732-2973
